Pirate Vocabulary:

  • Argh - Most popular pirate "word." Say it before every sentence!
  • Aye - yes
  • Buccaneer - Pirates who attacked the Spanish in the Caribbean
  • Overhaul - to come up next to
  • Ahoy, matey - hailing a fellow pirate
  • Ahoy Me hearties - hailing the crew.
  • Bring er alongside - Command to bring ships side-by-side.
  • Hang im from the yardarm - Punishment by hanging from the mast.
  • Dance the hempen jig - to hang
  • Shiver me Timbers - phrase expressing surprise
  • Scourge of the seven seas - an extremely mean pirate
  • Blow the man down - kill someone
  • Run a shot across the bow - command to fire a warning shot
  • Run a rig - play a trick
  • Hang the jib - frown or pout.
  • Ye - used in place of you
  • Me - Used in place of my
  • Booty - treasure
  • pieces of eight - Spanish coins found in pirate hoards
  • Doubloons -Spanish coins found in pirate hoards
  • Keelhaul - punishment where victim was tied to a rope, thrown overboard and then dragged under the ship.
  • Cat-o-Nine-Tails - a nine thonged whip
  • Scuttle - to sink
  • Cackle fruit - hen's eggs
  • Marooned - to be stranded, particularly on a deserted island
  • Six pounders - cannon
  • Scallywag - a villianous or mischievous person
  • Scurvy dog - a prolific pirate
  • Hornswaggle - to cheat
  • Heave to - come to a halt
  • Hempen halter - hangman's noose
  • Jolly Roger - flag declaring piracy, ususally black wth a white skull with crossing bones or swords.
  • Broadside - all the guns on one side of the ship; a round fired by all the guns on one side of a ship.
  • Careen - to beach a ship and make her lean in order to service the bottom of the hull.
  • Cutlass - a short heavy sword with a curved blade used by pirates and sailors.
  • Landlubber - a non-pirate or a curse for someone who is a coward. Also referred to somebody who was awkward, clumsy or not well-adjsted to seafaring ways.
  • Weigh anchor, Hoist the mizzen - Let's go
  • Davey Jones Locker - coffin in the sea.
  • A merry yarn - a good story
  • There's a storm brewing- phrase for sensing impending doom
  • Skuttle me skippers - making a mistake and being judged by it
  • Blow me down - You don't say, how surprising.
  • Messdeck lawyer - a know-it-all
  • All hands hoay - all hands on deck
  • Avast - stop and pay attention
  • Black spot - a death threat amongst pirates. A spot was drawn on a piece of paper and given to the one to be eliminated.
  • Dungbie - Rearend
  • Go-on-account - a tongue-in-cheek discription pirates use to describe becoming a pirate; comparing it to starting a business.
  • Horswaggle - to cheat or defraud someone.
  • Binnacle - latin for "dwelling place." A box or case on deck where the compass was kept.
  • Decks - if you stood at the helm (steering wheel) of the ship, "starboard" is on the right side, "Leeward" is to your left and the "Poop deck" is the one in back, usually above the captain's quarters.
  • Powder monkey - gunner's assistant.
  • Swing the lead - A lead weight tied to length of rope used to determine the depth of the water when close to shore. Job requirements were minimal and this term was often used to refer to someone goofing off.
  • Take a caulk - the cracks in the deck were filled with rope soaked in tar and called caulk. When a pirate went to take a nap on deck he was "takin' a caulk."
  • Grog - was the nickname of a British admiral. Also refered to a mix or water and rum that was used as a cheap antiseptic and a flavor mask for the spoiled water often encountered at sea.
  • Hogshead - a large wooden barrel that usually held alcohol.
  • The have the Davies; to have the Joneseys: to be scared or frightened.
  • See ye to Davey Jones: threaten to kill someone.
  • Man-o-War- A battle ship
